How far a cubic yard goes

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet: a patio, or a single planter, depending on depth.

Open the cubic yards calculator

One cubic yard covers

Depth Covered by one cubic yard
1 inch 324 square feet
2 inches 162 square feet
3 inches 108 square feet
4 inches 81 square feet
6 inches 54 square feet

Class 2 base compacts, so order 20 to 25 percent more than you measure.

How It Works

1. Enter your ZIP code

You see the materials we deliver to your area, with delivery already in the price.

2. Pick your material

Order from one cubic yard up to ten on a truck. The cubic yards calculator works out how much you need.

3. Pay and we deliver

Each truck carries up to 10 cubic yards, less by weight for heavier products. Bigger orders go out across more than one load.

One cubic yard. Most yards will not load less than five or ten. At the top end each 10 wheel truck holds up to 10 cubic yards of most materials, less by weight for heavier products such as Class 2 base, and anything larger goes across more than one truck.

About 12 feet of clear width, firm level ground, and open sky over the drop spot, because the bed lifts to roughly 22 feet to tip. Watch for low wires, branches and eaves, and mark the spot with a stake or a cone. You do not need to be on site if access is clear. Ten cubic yards lands as a pile 13 to 15 feet across and 5 to 6 feet high.

Multiply length by width by depth in feet and divide by 27, or put the same numbers into the cubic yards calculator. One cubic yard spreads 324 square feet at 1 inch, 162 at 2, 108 at 3, 81 at 4 and 54 at 6. For base that will be compacted, order 20 to 25 percent more.

So the site can show what we deliver to your area, with delivery already in the price. Nothing is added at checkout.

Yes. The price against each material is the delivered price. Nothing is added for freight at checkout.

Class 2 base (Class II) is a graded blend with fines in it, and the fines are what let it compact into a solid load bearing layer, so it belongs under concrete, pavers and asphalt. Crushed rock is a cleaner single size that stays loose and drains. Base to build up, crushed rock where water has to move.

They are the trade names for the sand that goes under and around foundations, footings and slabs. Depending on the spec you may want fill sand, washed concrete sand or plaster sand. If you are not sure, call 800‑777‑6299 and read us the spec.
